Everyday Cleaning of your Chopping Board

Unless you have been cutting meat, then a wipe with a clean wet cloth should be enough to give your board a basic clean after use. You can also wash your board in hot, soapy water, making sure you dry it immediately with a tea towel and leave it up right out of direct sunlight to thoroughly dry.

Do not clean in the dishwasher, this will wreck your chopping board.

Giving Your Board a Deep Clean

Every now and then you will want to give your chopping boards a really deep clean to keep them in top shape. Follow my steps below on how to give your board a deep clean:

  1. Wash the board in hot, soapy water.
  2. Sprinkle a generous amount of salt over the surface of the board and rub all over the surface of the board with a lemon half, one that’s already been squeezed is fine!
  3. Rinse with warm water and repeat on the other size. If your board has a ‘build up’ of goo, scrape off with a bench knife.
  4. Let the board dry.
  5. Use either food safe mineral oil, or our own specially developed board wax to generously coat the board with, using a soft, clean cloth (preferably white).
  6. Allow to sit for 20 to 30 minutes then wipe away the excess. Leave the board to dry overnight before using again.

Mineral oil or our wood wax are great to oil wooden bowls and utensils with as well.

Common Questions about Cleaning Wooden Chopping Boards

  • Can I use bleach on my board?

Yes you can, I recommend that you make up a weak bleach solution in a spray bottle and spray that onto your board, rinsing thoroughly after and allowing to air dry completely upright and out of direct sunlight.

  • Do I have to use mineral oil on my board?

No, you can use other types of oil. However there is a risk of the oil going rancid on your board if you use an oil like sunflower or olive. You will also get a better result out of using food safe mineral oil.

  • How often should I give it a deep clean?

This depends on how often you are using your board and if you are using it with raw meat. Around once a month is fine if you are using your board with fruit and vegetables.

  • How often should I condition my board?

If you are using your board everyday, then I would give it a rub with wood wax once a week to keep it nourished and looking good. If you use your board less often, it will need less conditioning.

  • How should I store my chopping boards?

Ideally chopping boards should be stored upright on their edge and out of direct sunlight. Not stacked in a drawer. This storage method will help to stop them from twisting and warping. Also it allows air to circulate around the board so it drys out properly.
