Blackmore Design was started in 2002 by Mike & Louise Blackmore. When they started the business their aim was to produce beautiful, handcrafted furniture in a way that was accessible and affordable for everyone.
In November of 2019, Blackmore Design was sold to another husband and wife team, Simon and Jess Neill.
For the last few years, Simon had been running his own small business (Be Different Timber Design) manufacturing solid wood furniture out of a local sawmill in Tauranga. His style had been quite different from that of the Blackmores, doing mainly rustic custom made indoor/ outdoor furniture, timber tops and basically anything that came in the door. After increasing popularity and more than enough work load that one man could do, it was time to step up. By chance they stumbled across the sale of Blackmore Design. Interesting enough, Simon had done his apprenticeship at Blackmore Design under Mike as his trainer. After finishing his training, he left Blackmores and for the next 14 years he worked his way through the timber industry, doing anything from high end furniture through to extra large rustic outdoor furniture with the odd boat fit out and kitchen renovation.
Jess has been in early childhood education for the past 14 years as a teacher, team leader and centre manager. She is now steeping into the business manager’s role to support Simon and is looking forward to adding her creative fleer within the furniture making industry.
Although furniture styles and trends have changed over the time, the way we make our furniture has not. Every piece we produce is handcrafted in our Mount Maunganui workshop by qualified tradesmen.
We welcome the involvement of our customers in the creative process and encourage you to visit us while we are making your new piece so you can enjoy the process with us.

We focus strongly on sustainability within our company and all of the timber we use comes from FSC certified sources. We also look to reuse and recycle production waste and minimise the footprint we leave behind.
Custom Made Furniture Craftsmanship
We use traditional method of furniture construction in our workshop. Those maybe old-fashioned, but definitely tried and true methods of constructing furniture which ensures that every piece made by us lasts for years to come.
Timber is jointed using dowels, not biscuits along with mortise and tenon joints where appropriate. All of the drawer boxes are constructed with dovetails which gives a solid drawer box and if required, drawers are mounted on high spec, stainless steel drawer slides.
We do all of the furniture finishing in house which means we can provide our customers with custom stain or paint finishes and keep a very high standard of finish. Some of the finishes we offer are oil & wax, lacquer and two-pot lacquer.
